Hiking In Shelter Cove

In beautiful Shelter Cove, located along the Lost Coast of the Northern California coast, you can hike and ride on long trails through the Redwoods and along rivers ending up at the black sand beaches of the Northern California coast.   If you can`t make the long hike back through the Avenue of the Giants back to your Shelter Cove resort, there are local services to pick you up.   Some of these areas in the Redwoods are also open to 4WD vehicles.   The most challenging hike in Shelter Cove is right along the Lost Coast. It is 24 miles from Shelter Cove to the mouth of the Mattole River. Only the most advanced hikers should try this hike. There are lots of other activities to do in Shelter Cove.

Shelter Cove has its own golf course as well as an airport. Many private planes take off from Shelter Cove; skydiver clubs visit Shelter Cove regularly. At Shelter Cove you have access to some of the most beautiful black sand beaches along the northern California coast. You can simply lay on the beach and soak up the sun, or go surfing or snorkeling in the water.

If you are more of an outdoors type, salmon fishing and abalone diving seasons are almost year round. What better way to remember your Shelter Cove vacation than with a picture of yourself holding up a 50 pound salmon? Many people find that a weeklong vacation at Shelter Cove just isn't long enough and decide to stay in Shelter Cove for good. In 2006, George W. Bush signed a bill which created a "wilderness" which included the entire Lost Coast seashore.  Shelter Cove is NOT included in this Wilderness area, however. Shelter Cove is the last great spot for your oceanfront home along the Northern California coast.  Visit Shelter Cove and maybe you'll decide to stay too!
